Labor Day 2002 on the American

[ Back to Garrett's Home Page ]

A group of us went up to the American river for some padding during the Labor Day 2002 extended weekend. We left early Friday (8/30) morning and arrived in at Dennis Ostrem's house (Dennis is Scott Ostrem's dad) in Sacramento in time to do some paddling at the local play spot. Unfortunately(?) we were all too busy having fun to take any pictures.

On Saturday, we did the upper part of the south fork of the American. Dennis was kind enough to lend me his Ace, which was a lot more fun to play in than my larger Z.

Here are some photos one of the commercial outfits (MyWhiteWaterPhotos.Com) took on my two runs through Troublemaker. (Its an easy portage to carry a boat back upstream to run the rapid more than once.)

On Sunday, we ran the lower portion of the south fork, which included two rapids. The first of these was Satan's Cesspool. I ran it twice, but only the first run was caught on film. (My second run I submarined into the monster hole on the left, and probably had around 3ft of water over my head -- and I was still upright!)

The first run, as you can see below, was run with Amanda Washburn leading the way.

The final named rapid we ran was Hospital Bar. Apparently this is a class III rapid, but after the other stuff we took it seemed pretty tame. Despite that, I seem to recall at least one paddler getting capsized here, though (gratefully) it wasn't me. (The rapid is really just a big wave.) We didn't stop to run this more than once.

In this rapid, I was in Ashley's Score, which was probably about an inch and half too short for me, so I was in some significant discomfort -- which is the excuse I'm using for my poor form at the start of the rapid.

Monday we went back to the play hole for a couple of hours (again no pictures) before trundling our way back to riverless San Diego.
